  • Geothermal cooling is a technology that uses the earth’s stable temperature to provide cooling solutions for buildings, campuses, and communities.

  • Geothermal cooling systems can reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, compared to conventional air-conditioning systems.

  • Geothermal cooling systems can be classified into two main types: geothermal heat pumps and geothermal district cooling.

  • Geothermal heat pumps use a loop of pipes filled with a liquid (water, refrigerant, or a mixture) that circulates underground, where the temperature is constant.

  • The liquid absorbs heat from the ground in winter and releases heat to the ground in summer, providing heating and cooling for the building.

  • Geothermal heat pumps can be installed in horizontal, vertical, or diagonal configurations, depending on the site conditions and available space.
